Last Thursday 9/15, a sewer line crossing a nearby lagoon was ruptured by a bulk header. Stafford Township had to run a temporary line blocking water passage by 12-15 streets while a permanent solution could be installed. With beautiful weather, a dwindling fluke season and a sidelined boat, I decided to hit the surf.
On Monday 9/19, I went to Surf City South 1st St. Using a 1 oz jig and teaser baited with a killie, I beached non-stop small fluke until I caught one just over 18″. The fluke are very close to shore right in the drop off. Yesterday afternoon, I went one block north to Division St and had Gulp. The action was almost every cast with a small fluke or a strike. After two hours of fun, I had a fish on that I knew was much bigger. I dragged onto the sand the almost 19″ in the photo. To my surprise, the stomach content had 5 small crabs!
The beaches are beautiful, very small crowds and with temperatures in the 70’s. It’s a great alternative to sitting idle! I enjoyed way more action than my last three trips with club members and my car uses a lot less gas getting over the causeway!
