On Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, Alan Goracy asked me to go fluking. Since my boat is still awaiting a fuel injector, I said sure. We fished the length of Double Creek Channel and despite excellent drifting conditions and an outgoing tide, we only managed 4 shorts and one slot keeper.
On Monday, Alan asked me again to join him for a short outing at the Middle Grounds. With no drift, we decided to go up by Morrison’s fuel dock (now Queen City Marina) where we felt the narrow channel would give us more drift. We were right on! Drift speed was .8 to 1.2 mph. We drifted down to the BHYC fuel docks before remaking the drift.
Over 3 hours we caught 5 fish. Four keeper fluke – 2 17 1/2 slots, one 18 1/2 and one 19 inch. I also caught a 20 inch bluefish. No throwbacks to deal with!
