reef not always the best place to fluke!! 7-30-14

7-30-2014, Pal dennis and i left for the GSS reef about 6:15, am..went thru the BH inlet at dead low [very smooth] headed east for GSS, stopped a one obstruction on the way in 60′ but did not really give it a good try being in patient to get to the REEF! Got there about 8:30, starting cacthing throw backs right away; then got a nice 22″ ,,,a few more throw backs,,[also a 12″ lingcod] repeated same drifts thru same area, [SE corner] but the bite had stopped…. so we headed off to north eastern corner, where we had caught fish last year , drift after drift was coming up with same result..no fish…about 1 pm now and decided to head closer to the beach… by the time we got there the good north drift we had had all morning had stopped ,, whisps of breeze suggested the wind was going to change south.. i suggested we head to inlet to get adrift from tidal flow, dennis wanted to wait for the south wind…we waited, we ate sandwiches, and played wit a huge school of bunker all around the boat. about 1:00pm wind from south at last was moving boat about 0.7 knts. using old numbers , some from as long ago when i first got a handheld gps…in 55′ of water ,,we started getting shorts again and then picked up three keepers 18″,20″‘ and a 22″…by 3:30 the drift was 1.5 and we were back to 8 oz. sinkers, the big nuclear chickens and dog fish strips on spinner rigs were what seemed to work…. the thing i think is important is that the ocean is big and that when the reef is not producing for you,, try those old marks on your gps, you marked them in the past for some reason, and they need to be tried again…russell denton

Fishing Facts

Of the fifty United States, thirty-eight have a striped-bass record. New Jersey has the largest striped-bass record—a 78-pound 8·ounce whopper that was caught in 1982. The state with the smallest striped-bass record is Iowa. That landlocked striper weighed only 9 pounds 4 ounces and was caught in 1983.

There’s something fishy about beer these days. Fish Tail Ale is popular as ever, and New Jersey’s Flying Fish Brewery is one of the state’s largest specialty breweries. There’s also Washington’s Wild Salmon Organic Pale Ale, Florida’s Land Shark beer, Delaware’s Dogfish Head beer, and two versions of Stingray beer—a lighter version from the Cayman Islands and a dark beer from Canada.

The triangle fly is probably the most unusual of saltwater flies. It’s one of the few, if not only, flies tied to a treble hook. It’s also barely a fly at all, because hardly any material is used. It is complete after tying the two straw pearl twinkle flashes and the tiny tuft of natural squirrel, leaving an entire hook fully exposed. Incredibly this barebacked treble fly is a knockout when it comes to sea trout.
