After hearing some rumors (reports) of weakfish being caught in our area, I decided to give it a try this weekend. Saturday morning started out a lot windier than the 5-10 that was forecast, so I deferred till Sunday. I got a little later start than I wanted, but left the dock a little after 6. Luckily there were clouds on the eastern horizon which helped keep the light level down for a while. I was getting some little bites but couldn’t hook anything. Then I felt a subtle bite which started to make a strong run. As I was working the fish to the surface, I was also trying to free my net from an unknown snag on the bottom of the boat. By the time I got the net free, the fish released itself, but not before I got a look at a nice 2 or 3 pound weakie. Lesson learned, always have the net ready to go, before the lines are in the water. After the sun cleared the clouds, the bite shut down.
Hopefully, I can get another shot at the weakies before the summer is over.
